SPECIMEN PICK UP AND SUPPLIES

Heartland Pathology Consultants provides daily specimen pick-ups.  Specimens must be packaged in a biohazard bag.  Heartland Pathology Consultants provides requisitions, printer paper and all anatomical pathology supplies.  To order supplies or if you need an additional pick-up call intechra Logistics (formerly BCS) at (405) 619-9331 or 866-626-2008.

SPECIMEN LABELING AND REQUISITIONS

Specimens submitted for any testing should be labeled with the patient name, biopsy site and unique requisition (peel-off) identification number.  Each specimen must also be accompanied by a completed Heartland Pathology Consultants test requisition with clinical history and a copy of the patient’s insurance card(s).

  SURGICAL TISSUE SPECIMENS

Specimens should be submitted in 10% Neutral Buffered Formalin.  Specimen containers must be securely tightened to eliminate leakage.  Larger specimens, such as amputated limbs, should be wrapped in several red biohazard bags, secured and sent fresh (without Formalin).

  FINE-NEEDLE ASPIRATIONS

Pathologists can perform and interpret fine-needle aspirations of palpable nodules such as thyroid and breast nodules.  Please call (405-715-4500) to set up an appointment.  Additionally, kits to aid in the collection of FNA specimens are available upon request as well as expanded collection instructions.

  HEMATOPATHOLOGY

Specimen required for CBC Differential Consult

       1.  CBC:  4-7 mL EDTA whole blood (lavender top tube). Refrigerate for transport

       2.  Clinical history and clinical impression.

  BONE MARROW STUDIES

Specimen Required:

1. CBC:   4-7 mL EDTA whole blood (lavender top tube).  Refrigerate for transport.

2.  Bone Marrow Biopsy Core: Slides: Touch preps prepared by touching the core lightly to a clean glass slide.  Label with patient name and “Core.”  Material is kept at room temperature.  Do not refrigerate slides.

Core Biopsy: Place in 10% Neutral Buffered Formalin.  Material is kept at room temperature until transport.

3.  Bone Marrow Aspirate:

Slides: Make four to eight slides by putting a single drop of marrow aspirate from the syringe or needle on each slide and making a blood film as you would with a peripheral blood smear.  Thoroughly air dry.  Label these slides with patient name and “ASP.”  Material is kept at room temperature.  Do not refrigerate slides.

Aspirate: Fill a 5 mL blood tube (containing approximately 0.5 mL of EDTA) with 1.5 mL of bone marrow aspirate material.  Mix well to prevent clotting as soon as possible after the aspirate is drawn.  Label this tube with patient’s name and as “Aspirate.”  Refrigerate for transport.

Aspirate Clot:Place the remainder of the aspirate material in a tube with no anticoagulant (red top tube) and allow the material to clot.  The clot should then be placed in 10% buffered formalin.  Material is kept at room temperature for transport.

 4.   Please contact Heartland Pathology Consultants (405-715-4500) so that we may fax expanded instructions.

NON-GYNECOLOGICAL FLUIDS

Slides from direct smears, brushings and aspirations: Specimen slides should be fixed immediately in 50% alcohol or spray fixative.  Slides should be labeled with the patient name and defined by a number (i.e., requisition information, “Slide #1 – Left main stem bronchus”).  Keep at room temperature for transport.

Fluids: Specimen fluids should be fixed in 50% ethyl alcohol with a volume equal to the estimated specimen volume.  Keep at room temperature for transport.

Please contact Heartland Pathology Consultants (405-715-4500) so that we may fax you expanded specimen collection technique for Non-Gyn specimens.
